History & Heritage

A Campbeltown Legend

Springbank is the oldest independent family-owned distillery in Scotland, and one of only a handful that performs every stage of production on site — from malting the barley to bottling the whisky. Nestled on Longrow in the heart of Campbeltown, it stands as a proud survivor of a town that once boasted over thirty distilleries.

The Mitchell family has held the keys since 1828, making it a true generational operation. In an era of corporate ownership and industrial scale, Springbank remains fiercely traditional. The malt is floor-malted by hand, the stills are direct-fired, and every bottle is filled on site. It is whisky-making in its purest form.

Regional Character

The Spirit of Campbeltown

Campbeltown whisky is often described as having a briny, slightly oily character with a maritime influence. Springbank exemplifies this — its spirit carries the sea air and the salt of the Kintyre peninsula, balanced with a complex malty sweetness that is entirely its own.

What makes Springbank truly unique is its distillation: two and a half times. This unusual process (not double, not triple) creates a spirit of remarkable complexity — lighter than a traditional Campbeltown but with more depth than a Lowland triple distillation.

General Tasting Character

Nose: Sea salt, damp earth, green pear, and vanilla. A thread of light peat smoke weaves through citrus oil and honey.

Palate: Full-bodied and oily. Salted caramel, toasted malt, dried fruit, and coconut. The maritime character is unmistakable — brine and mineral notes create depth.

Finish: Long, complex, and satisfying. Lingering salt, peat smoke, and a gentle sweetness that speaks of the Kintyre coast.
